Ebo Town Community has a population of 70,000 (source: UNICEF), and is situated along the Brikama - Banjul highway, dividing communities of Tallinding and Jeshwang. Ebo Town community is prone to flooding during the wet season. Here families continually worry that they will loose valuable items. Terrible floods expose the community to diseases like cholera and malaria with unhygienic living conditions. Heavy rainwater flows through the community to the river affecting their environment adversely. Ebo Town community is one of the poorest communities in The Gambia.
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS THE SCHOOL WAS SET UP IN THIS COMMUNITY. WE ARE NOW AS A CHARITY ABLE TO OFFER HELP AND SUPPORT TO OUR CHILDRENS FAMILIES WITH AID PLUS ANYONE ELSE WE FIND LIVING IN DIRE CONDITIONS
OUR COMMUNITY WORK
Our work in the community currently involves ensuring we can provide the poorer families with rice and mosquito nets and hopefully we can supply some clothing and bedding aid to hopefully ease some lives. During the rainy season some homes find their living/sleeping areas filled with water. If homes have furniture it is in very poor condition, we have witnessed homes with not a piece of furniture just a concrete floor to sleep on. Some families sleep 5-6 people to one bed, but most families can sleep on a thin piece of foam on the floor, we have witnessed families sharing a piece of cardboard. Teams from the UK go out to the community twice a year (all self funded), to give out aid, and offer support. Through kind donations to our appeals we are able to raise enough funds buy rice bags and life saving mosquito nets. We also offer cleaning packs with the basics in them.
Teams walk in the community under the umbrella of the school, we are warmly invited into homes. We check the needs of families and assist where ever we find we are able to. On past trips, we have bought beds, repaired broken roofs, bought wheel chairs, the needs are many.
We realise we can not change the situation, but we can try our best to ease lives just a little.
