Mandela School was closed down in March 2015 leaving 170 plus children without access to education. The charity worked with the Education Department and decided that it could take on the responsibility of running a nursery school. Ebo Town Nursery School was formed. The charities aim was to give children a FREE education and set up a sponsorship programme, whereby a suggested donation from £25.00 per year per child, would go some way to covering wages, uniforms and all educational material. Ebo Town Nursery School is built on love and suport for the physical and emotional needs of both the children and their familes, through partience and hard work we are now a fully recognised school in The Gambia, and have our school license.
We started operating within the grounds of a government run school (Tallinding Lower Basic). After many meetings a Memorandum of Understanding was signed allowing the charity to use the bulding until April 2020. It was promised that all our 7 year old children would get automatic transfer to Grade 1 education.
We had to start the school from scratch, we had tables, benches, blackboards, made locally. We put out appeals for educational equipment, we were giving some very generoud donations from local schools in the UK, we shippped out sand pits, rocking horses, puzzles, reading books, and plenty of stationery. We have created two classrooms Rainbows for our 4-5 year old, and Butterfly class for our 6-7 year olds. We designed our school logo and had uniforms made, pale blue for our Rainbow children, and Navy Blue for our Butterfly children. We employed our staff, which were attending Teacher training college.
In September 2021, after a leap of faith, we have built a fantastic 3 classroom school in the heart of Ebo Town Community.
MOTTO: WE ARE PLANTING SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE.
In July 2021, at the end of term 3, we closed our doors on our school in Tallinding, and focused on getting our new school building ready to open for the new academic school year, starting on 20th September 2021. With the opening of a new school, we as Trustees wanted to ensure our children achieved to their fullest potential, and got busy looking for new teachers that had the same visions and expectations as the Trustees. We have welcomed a fantastic team, with only one staff member having to travel from outside of Ebo Town Community.
Each classroom has two blackboards, so that teachers can progress the more able students, each classroom has a cupboard to keep education materials clean and safe. Our baby class has proudly got a TV and usb driver. Children come from different tribal backgrounds and speak their own tribal language, this is difficult for the teacher and they use educational material for the children to watch on a TV to help them in the first year of education.
We too have paid for many extras that the teachers have asked for so that the school is well equipped and the children can benefit.
